Great UK Maps - Whitbarrow Scar
Whitbarrow Scar is a limestone escarpment on the periphery of the Lakes National Park. The map is big by any standards and the area offers challenging orienteering in terrain which is unfamiliar to most competitors.
The area is roughly divided into two. The western section has open limestone escarpment with subtle contours, small crags, juniper and gorse bushes. Some of the mapped crags are very small (barely knee high), which is worth remembering if you've only orienteered on the big rock features more commonly mapped in Scottish forests.
The eastern section is covered by mixed woodland on top of limestone pavement which makes for very difficult running conditions in places. Sprained ankles are a big risk for the reckless. A disused limestone quarry offers some very complex contours in an area of boulders and spoil heaps.
The area has been used for several major events including the excellent Blodslitet Event. The controlling club is SROC.
