Beachen and Heathfield West
Near: grantown
This area is immediately west of Grantown and could be combined with the Grantown street map. There is a good mix of birch forest and coniferous plantation. Some sections are quite rocky with plenty of boulders. Recent felling in the south west of the map has not greatly effected the quality of the orienteering. There is an adjacent amenity woodland on the opposite side of the road which is suitable for junior courses.

The Craigellachie Nature Reserve is immediately west of Aviemore and is accessed via a tunnel under the A9. The lower area is birch forest with some small lochans. There is a good path leading up 400M or so to an intricate open area around Lochan Dubh. A good area but badly effected by bracken in the summer.

A very pleasant birch forest connected by a bridge over the railway to a fast open area beside loch Insh. This area can easily be combined with Speybank to make longer courses. An excellent training area with easy access.

Inveruglas
Near: Insh
This is a large working forest behind the village of Insh. The map adjoins Uath Lochan and can be combined for long courses. Unfortunately there has been some heavy thinning in across some of the map which has reduced run-ability. There are still large areas that remain intact with challenging navigation through the various shades of green. Well featured with plenty of boulders and subtle re-entrants.

Loch Vaa
Near: Boat of Garten
The northern section of the map is well thinned scotch pine plantation while the southern section around the loch has some mature scotch pine forest and birch wood. The birch wood south of the loch has excellent moraine contour detail with lots of negative features and is excellent for training. There is a large area of open heather moor to the east of the railway line. This has good contour detail but the heather is slow going at the moment.

Strathmashie
Near: newtonmore
Not one of our best areas but still pretty good by UK standards in genreal. Strathmashie is a working sitka spruce plantation and the map is subject to change. The terrain is well featured with plenty of crags, boulders, streams and marches. Successfully used for the Scottish Champs relay in 2009

Uath Lochan
Near: kincraig
This is one of the best Speyside forests. There has been some felling recently but the best bits are still intact. To the east of road there are broad ridges of runnable scots pine plantation while to the west of the Uath Lochans, above a line of crags, there is a fantastic area of highly technical ‘green’ forest with boulders, marches and subtle re-entrat features. The area immediately north of the car park has abundant features and is excellent for a quick training session.
