Post Oban Awards Evening

Club members who had been at the Oban 6 Day Event - plus or minus a few - met on 15th August for a glittering awards ceremony. So glittering was it, Hilary S had her legs on display, and Hilary Q was wearing a positively feminine top.
The theme of the evening was of course to re-create the atmosphere of the 6 Day but without the mud, rain, midges or filthy socks. So that just left the food.... a chilli not unlike that from Wilf's (now Scotts' but that could be confusing) except Libby's had meat in it. OK it was a tenuous link.
Highlight of the evening, well in third place after the food and the scintillating conversation, was the awards ceremony itself. Hilary Q made a tedious speech praising the fantastic orienteering skills of so many members, pointing out the various badges being worn - Gold for Alex Campbell (M50L), Callum Scott (M55L), Adrian Hope (M80) and herself (no false modesty!) (W55L), Silver for Donald McCarthy (M35L) and Bronze for Hilary Scott (W55L) and Libby Lamb (W55S). She gave special mention to Marion MacCormick for her excellent organisational efforts in the face of multiple complex adversities (which indirectly led to her missing out on a badge award), and to Alex Campbell for excellent support on the course planning effort for Day 5. Finally, she gave out the Wooden Spoon awards: these awards had to be claimed by the person who admitted a major blunder. It wasn't right for anyone else to make a nomination. On Day 1 Callum Scott repeatedly went through a marked wall crossing thinking he was crossing under a power line (when do power lines have marked crossing points Callum????). He did something remarkably similar on Day 3, thereby earning himself two of the coveted awards. Mrs Scott (Hilary) claimed the one for Day 2, for taking 20 minutes on her second control, a leg which should have taken about 2 minutes, and not having a clue afterwards where she'd been. On Day 4 Peter Lamb walked half way up the long steep hillside before he realised he'd gone a LONG way past his first control (24 minutes later), and on Days 5 and 6 Donald McCarthy and Alex Campbell respectively made what we call "parallel errors" - thinking they were on one particular feature when in fact they were on a similar one nearby. Everything fits... well, nearly... and eventually the light bulb goes on. Bill McCarthy accepted the award on Donald's behalf.
The prizes were kindly donated by Callum Scott, which made it perfectly reasonable for the Scotts to take half of them...
Big thanks to Libby and Peter for hosting the evening, and apologies to them for the typos in early issues of the printed newsletter where Peter's error was given as having been on Day 3, and the 1 that had gone missing from that had somehow attached itself to the "tens" column of Libby's age class, with horrible results.
