Directions / Parking

The assembly is 9 miles south of Aviemore, adjacent to the Highland Wildlife Park. Follow the signs "Polar Bears at Highland Wildlfe Park". N.B. Since the dualling there are no short cuts across the A9. Travelling north towards Inverness on the A9, turn off for Kingussie / Kincraig, and follow the B9152 north. Travelling south towards Perth on the A9, turn off south of Aviemore for Kincraig and follow the B9152 through Kincraig to the Park.

Take the turning off the B9152 to the Wildlife Park. This entrance is shared with the Park traffic so look out for the marshals directing the SOL traffic. The Park is even more popular this year because of visitors coming to see the baby polar bear and baby leopard so please allow plenty of time to reach the event.

The main car parking field is next to assembly. For safety, there is NO EXIT FROM THE PARKING UNTIL 12:30pm.

Map / Terrain

The map was updated in 2018 by Stirling Surveys and will be printed at a scale of 1:10,000 for all classes/courses.

The area consists of open moorland, runnable woods and, near the finish, open fields. The moorland is partly heather and partly bog (although as of July, these are almost dry) and can be very physical to run through. There is a fair amount of juniper and bracken, particularly to the west of the Dunachton Burn. The woods are mainly birch and cover some very technical ground. The open fields are mainly grazing so are very runnable at speed.

There are some large crags in the west of the area. Courses have been planned to avoid these. For your own safety, please do not attempt to climb or descend them.

There are several deer fences across the area. These are marked as uncrossable on the map. Courses have been planned to use gates. Please do not attempt to cross at any other point. Any competitors seen climbing deer fences will be disqualified.

There is livestock in the area, sheep in particular, also deer. For this reason, the gates will be unfastened but held closed with elastic during the event. They should be easy to push/pull open and will swing shut behind you. You can try this out at the gate beside the start if you are unsure how it works. If you notice a gate which is open, please report this at download.

Most of the area is very exposed. In the event of poor weather, we may make cagoules compulsory. In this event, we will update the website and have a sign at assembly. If the weather is particularly hot, you may wish to consider sun protection and carrying water. Water will not be provided on the courses or at the finish. We do NOT recommend drinking from the streams! Whatever the conditions, we strongly recommend that you carry a whistle.

Be aware that we are orienteering in a working estate so please try not to startle any livestock and let us know at Registration if you know of any walls or fences that have been damaged. Also look out for adders and be aware that some low fences include barbed wire.

Registration and Start times

Registration, Enquiries and Download will be in the BASOC tents. Look for our banner. Registration will be open from 10:00 - 12:00 for EOD and other enquiries.

Reminder: White and yellow course maps will ONLY be available at registration.

All competitors, including those that are pre-registered, must follow the 1.2km taped route via Assembly to the Start. It is mostly flat with only 35m of climb. It is not suitable for buggies, although you might get one through with persistence.

Starts are from 10:30 am until 12:30pm. Start times will be allocated and you need to keep to them. There are very few empty slots to fit you in if you are late. White and Yellow courses will have a punching start with no allocated start times. The maps are ONLY available at Registration.

Start times will be available at Registration and the Start.

Competitors who miss their allocated Start-time must wait until the Starter finds an available slot complying with Competition Rules. Start procedure is a -4 min call-up and punching start.

Finish: The run-in finishes in the assembly area. Follow the taped route from the Finish control to Download.

The courses close at 15:00.

PLEASE GO TO DOWNLOAD, EVEN IF YOU DON’T FINISH. This is our way of checking that no competitors are left out lost or injured.

Course Information

There will be the full range of colour-coded courses, from White to Black (10km+), and a string course. As with all SOLs you may choose to run any course, but to be competitive in your age class you should run the course specified below. Details are subject to final controlling.

Shadowing juniors on the white and yellow courses is allowed. Parents are reminded they should declare if they are helping a Junior competitor as opposed to following. Assisted juniors are competitive in their colour course (e.g. White) but not in age class (e.g. W10B). SOA rules state that you must have completed your own race before undertaking any shadowing.
