Local level event
Explanation of event levels
Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive events used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships.
BASOC Club Champs and local event as part of FVO training weekend. Making full use of the lovely Nethybridge area we will be providing a score event with a bit of a twist. Multiple options for you to choose your route, maximise your points, but make sure you are back on time.
SCORE events have multiple controls to select from. Each control is worth a set number of points. Participants pick their route to try to get as many controls as possible within a set time. Any participants finishing after the set time will lose points.
This event will have a little bit of a twist to ensure it is suitable for all, regardless of experience, fitness, or confidence.

Directions / Parking
Please be considerate of the local residents when parking. There is some parking at the hall and this should be used first. The community request a donation of £2 for parking at the hall. We would ask you to support this and the local community town hall.
Map / Terrain
Mixed woodland. Northern part of the area is generally runnable. Southern part of the area has deeper heather in places. The deepest of heather (waist high!) is marked in undergrowth screens and the courses avoid this.
Under 16s course will only use the Southern part of the area to ensure no road crossing.
Competitors must only cross the River Nethy over the bridges marked on the map. A direct fording of the river is not permitted and will likely be very dangerous in any case.

For BASOC members (and others if interested - please let us know as we need to manage numbers):
- 13.00-15.00 we will be running a introduction training to all things event timing. This is suitable for anyone in the club who is interested. It will provide people with the basics on how to do timing for events. The aim is to build knowledge and confidence within club members. This helps for our events, but may also be useful for you and other clubs you are involved with. The session will be mostly indoors and very close to the hall.
Course Information
There will be two score maps.
- Main score map will use the full Nethybridge area and include road crossings, which will be unmarshalled but are on generally very minor roads with slow moving traffic.
- The under 16 version (for those under 16 on the day of the competition) will use the same controls but will only have those controls on the southern part of the map marked on. This will avoid the need to cross any roads.
The score controls includes a “spine” of controls labelled numbers 1 to 7 which form a TD2 loop of 1.4km.
There are a maximum of 40 controls. Let the organiser know if you have a really old SI unit that cannot take 40 controls.
Maximum time limit is 60 minute (you do not have to stay out that long).
Each control is worth 1 point. Every minute or part of a minute late (i.e. over 60 minutes) you will lose 1 point.
Start selection, distance and format:
- The special twist for the event is that there will be multiple starts and competitors will choose which start they want. Maps will be handed out at the hall 25 minutes before the start time for competitors to choose which start they want.
- Competitors will then need to use this 25 minute window to look at route options, choose their start and then navigate to the desired start by themselves and start at the appropriate time (see start times above). You don’t need to let any officials know which start you are going to use in advance.
- All competitors much punch the start unit at their start. Your punching start time will be used but please start at the right time to enhance the head-to-head nature as everyone converges at the finish from your wave.
- There will be a map marked up on the day in the hall which shows the routes to the starts. Competitors will need to navigate along that route (it won’t be marked on the ground).
- Max 1.3km to the start so don’t spend too long faffing in the hall choosing your start!
Don't worry if it is not clear there will be plenty of help on the day. Just come along and enjoy. You might want to bring a pen!
