Event Report

Apologies to the Green course competitors who had the wrong time input for the mass start and so their splits printout at download had approx 8 extra mins to the first control. This was soon rectified and all results are now correct.

Q: What does "Gaffled" mean?

A: Gaffel is the Swedish word for 'fork'. It's where a course is forked in places to minimise following. This is mostly used in relay running where over the 3 legs, everyone has run exactly the same. Due to the veteran home international relay in the morning, we thought it would be a great opportunity to use these courses for everyone to have a go. It meant that you didn't run exactly the same as other people on the green, so as a stand alone event it wasn't completely fair. However the distances were all within i think 30m. It's not a concept that would be used in a championship of any sort (apart from relay of course!). It meant that for today you were running similar to others, but had to keep concentrating because you might not always have the same next control. Hope that helps!

Explanation of colour courses

  • White are very easy with all controls on paths. They are mainly used by 6-10 year olds and family groups.
  • Yellow use simple linear features like paths, walls and streams. They are mainly used by under 12’s and family groups.
  • Orange progress to basic use of the compass and route choice. They are ideal for novice adults or experienced youngsters.
  • Light Green are ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase and uses simple contours and point features.
  • Green are used mostly by experienced under 18’s and adults wanting a short but challenging course with a very hard navigational difficulty.
  • Blue are a longer, more physically demanding course in comparison to the green. The distances are more varied between controls and the course attracts experienced orienteers.
  • Brown & Black are very physically demanding and have a very hard navigational difficulty. They are for experienced orienteers only.
  • Score means visiting as many controls as possible in any order in a specific time, like 45mins.

Terrain Description

Auchernack & Balliefurth is a narrow area bounded by the River Spey to the west and the B970 to the east. There is excellent contour detail with birch woodland and open areas and coniferous forest for the longer courses. Scale 1:7,500, contour Interval 5m, minor revisions Aug 2017.

White and yellow will have a taped route to number 1.

The area is generally runnable throughout and is grazed by livestock (but there will be no livestock on the day). There are a few small paths made by motocross bikes which are indistinct and not on the map (but any significant paths are). There are also numerous very small fenced enclosures which are not on the map. There are some small areas of bracken which do not affect courses hence are not mapped.

Fences marked with a purple line must be crossed at marked crossing points. Should you wish to cross the fence alongside the Speyside way this is allowable but there are several gates that may provide a quicker option.

The B970 is out of bounds and marked as such on the map.

Toilets will be available in the parking field.

There are no toilets in the arena.
