Approach to control 171 on course 3

Unfortunately a serious problem with the map in the vicinity of control 171 affected the results of Course 3.  The map had an erroneous area of olive green covering the gap between a building and an uncrossable fence. As the mapper I am responsible for the error and apologise for this. Although difficult to pick up on the printed maps it is very obvious on the Condes and OCAD file. (see the map extract and the blue arrow pointing at it). The uncrossable fence adjacent to the building was new and I added this without spotting a narrow strip of olive green now blocked the way through.

Some competitors crossed the olive green and others went around. The time difference between the 2 routes was significant. I would like to thank the competitors that pointed this out and the competitor that made an official complaint. It is obvious from the splits in and out of control 171 that the results on Course 3 are not fair.

The BOF rules allow the results for this event to be adjusted by removing the relevant legs. This has been considered carefully. In order to make the event as fair as possible for the majority, I fully support the organiser’s decision to remove leg 2 and 3 on Course 3.

Results updated

The results have been updated and legs 2 & 3 have been removed from course 3 results.

RouteGadget can't be updated with this change now that routes have been added.
RG is only for capturing route choice and is not considered as official results. Competitors did visit those controls and so their route choice is still of interest.

It looks like Winsplits can't handle the removal so still shows the original result.
