Welcome to 2024 - happy orienteering in a variety of areas!

1. Anti-Doping information

Everyone who takes part in orienteering has a responsibility to inform themselves about the doping legislation. The framework has just had an update and came into force on 1st January 2024. Both Scottish Orienteering and British Orienteering have articles to inform you on their websites, along with a link to the WADA website.
There is also information on the BASOC website Don’t be a Dope - this has been updated December 2023.
"An athlete is solely responsible for any prohibited substance or method they use, attempt to use or that is found in their system, regardless of how it got there or whether there was an intention to cheat or not."

2. Scottish Orienteering diary dates

Scottish Orienteering have put together a calendar of dates for events.
Another useful reference for you to plan your year with!

3. Northern Night Cup (NNC)

Wednesday 17th January: Burgie (postponed from December), MOR. Entries have reopened, close on Sunday 14th January.
Wednesday 24th January: Spey Valley Golf Course, BASOC. Entries will open by Monday 8th January, close on Sunday 21st January.
Wednesday 31st January: Carsehill, MOR
Wednesday 7th February: Nairn East Beach, INVOC

4. Tuesday=O training

Winter weather can change our plans. Tuesday=O might have to be cancelled due to circumstances like poor driving conditions (snow, strong winds) or conditions in the training area (especially strong winds). If this is the situation, notice will be placed here and also on the BASOC Facebook page by 12 noon on the day of the training. Also, if you are thinking of going along on a Tuesday, let Lynne know and she will email you directly if the training is cancelled.
January schedule: Tuesday 9th January: Dunachton, concentrating on using the compass to accurately cover a short distance, along with distance judgement in terrain.
Tuesday 16th, 23rd, 30th January and 6th February: no Tuesday=O as the Northern Night Cup is taking place on the Wednesday of those weeks.
Tuesday=O training will recommence on Tuesday 13th February 2024.

6. Compass Sport Cup & Trophy Heat - Save the Date!

Join the club at Brinam Hill for the first team event of 2024 on Sunday 18th February. The event is based on the colour-coded system but the team element means we are looking to get at least 13 club members taking part across the courses to make up a team score. Last year BASOC punched well above our weight taking 6th place among much bigger clubs so we hope to repeat or better this in 2024. Club Captain, Jane, will be in touch soon to get entries organised.
To whet your appetite check out this Route Gadget of the area from the 2019 Middle Distance Champs.

7. BASOC Event Safety & Welfare workshop

This workshop will be held on Sunday 14th January 2024 in Carrbridge. The Event Safety and Welfare Workshop is suitable for anyone who orienteers; the Event Organiser Workshop is aimed at those who might organise on O event. Details are on the website with the sign up form to be completed by Tuesday 9th January 2024 at 8pm. Both workshops are free to BASOC members. If you have any questions then please contact Lynne.

8. Rules of Orienteering

British Orienteering have updated the Rules for 2024. Have a look through, especially pages 62, 65 and 69 as there have been some changes as to which age group is recommended to run which course / colour-coded course.
Also have a read of ‘5. Safety’ (page 8), ‘7. Conduct’ (page 9) and ‘8. Clothing and Equipment’ (page 10).

9. BASOC memberships

A reminder from the membership secretary
“A few members haven't yet renewed - please do that soon so you keep your current membership number. “
