Events season - Scottish Champs and NUL as well as training on Wednesdays in May.

1. Adrian Hope

We were saddened to hear that former (and long-term) BASOC member Adrian Hope passed away peacefully on Monday 22nd April, at the grand age of 95. He was surrounded by his family, and freely admitted he'd given life "a good shot". For some time Adrian was the SOA's oldest member, and he last participated in an orienteering event at the Scottish 6 Days in 2021, when he took a spectacular win in the M90 class, having earlier also clinched the British and Scottish titles. Adrian always had a cheery smile and a wonderfully positive outlook. We send our sincere condolences to his family.

2. Scottish Orienteering Champs weekend

Saturday 25th May: Scottish Individual Champs: Creag Leach, near Inverness. Entries close Saturday 11th May 2024 at 23:00.

Sunday 26th May: Scottish Relay Champs: Roseisle, near Forres. Jane will be in touch about Relay teams – BASOC like to take part rather than stress about winning!

BASOC will be helping at the individual day, running the two starts; Clare will be in touch about this.

3. Wednesday=O

15th & 22nd May: Wednesday=O at Nethy. Details are on the website.

On 22nd May, the training encompasses WOW (World Orienteering Week) and will be followed by a social. There will probably be a 'Long Orange' course suitable for runners!

4. NUL (Northern Urban League)

At each event there will be a Long course (5km to 6.5km) and a Short course (3km to 3.5km). Please support the events, especially the BASOC one. A lot of work goes into putting the events on - Callum as planner and Stuart as entries / computing would appreciate seeing as many BASOC members as possible there!

5. Message from BASOC Chair

Great to see club members participating in events across Scotland in April, including Rebecca and Janette participating in the Scottish Middle Champs at Alyth where warm weather, intricate gorse mapping, and an uphill straight from the start provided a fun and challenging course. Eight club members (Calum, Hilary, Marion, Clare, Janette, Rebecca, Pat, and Ray) made the trip through the mist across to Deeside for SOL 2 at Balfour Forest. A lovely, mixed, and challenging area. Great results by all, with special mention to Ray and Pat who completed a particularly challenging orange course. Club members have also been taking advantage of the great series of local events being organised by Moravian.
With spring and light nights, club training night has been going from strength to strength in April, including attracting some new participants.
The Scottish Orienteering Association (SOA) Volunteers Day is now taking place at Glenmore Lodge, Aviemore on Sunday 2nd June 9.30 - 4.30. There will be a variety of workshops led by experts in their field including mentoring, planning, volunteer management, coaching and publicity - something for everybody. There will also be the chance to learn how to use Maprun in the glorious setting of Glenmore Lodge. Full details of all the workshops are on the SOA website along with an outline for the day. Lunch will be provided as well as the obligatory cake. It should be a great day with something for everyone. If you are interested the deadline for sign-ups is Wednesday 15th May using the registration form.

6. BASOC Board meetings
