Windy Ridge and social

Mid summer in the Cairngorms, it seemed like an ideal time to use 'Windy Ridge' (An t-Aonach) which is the open heathery hillside between Coire Cas and Coire na Ciste car parks. After all, the weather would be benign as it was mid-summer? And let's plan a social afterwards as well.

In the end the weather was Ok with a light breeze keeping midges away; the cloud lifted, just, and the rain stopped although underfoot was quite damp. 22 athletes came along to sample the delights of Windy Ridge, all returning by about 7:30pm with rave reviews of their experience out there. Most walked up to the top - and the highest control at about 770m, paused to admire the view and then orienteered downhill back to the car park. This gave lots of practise at diagonal downhill legs. The faster runners visited all the controls and mentioned the deeper heather towards Coire na Ciste (this slope is less exposed to the wind).

22 athletes is an excellent turn out for a Tuesday evening - there must be a reason for this? Well advertise a b-b-q and BASOC turn out in numbers! The beach at Loch Morlich (along with picnic tables) was the ideal place for this; b-b-qs were provided and all brought along their own food and what a variety of food as well. The Kenyon family from MOR had come to the training as well and we all celebrated Faith's 14th birthday with a lovely cake made by Lil.

It was mid summer, there was a loch so some BASOC swam as well. Most shunned wetsuits and claimed that it was not too cold. They did seem to be huddled close to the b-b-q warmth afterwards though.

It was a great opportunity to catch up before the summer, finding out who was heading where for July, chatting with the juniors who will be off to a variety of summer camps (scout camp in Lochgoilhead and Atlanta USA; orienteering camps at Lagganlia, Deeside and Stockholm; a visit to China) along with family summer holidays. Most will be at Strathearn 2019 with BASOC helping on Day 3, which is a Tuesday so will that be our Tuesday=O for 30th July?

Tuesday=O will continue throughout the summer. All details will be on the BASOC website. In July this training will be focussed on race preparation for Strathearn 2019.
