Badenoch & Strathspey Orienteering Club

Holidays are now a distant memory for most - and the fact that there was frost on the car this morning means that there are many positives for orienteers. The bracken is beginning to turn colour and die back a bit; visibility in the woodlands changes as trees turn through golden colours and eventually lose their leaves.
There is quite a bit of news this month and the committee have also met so there are some updates regarding BASOC business.

1. Scottish Orienteering Bronze Accreditation

This is a new scheme set up by Scottish Orienteering. Basically clubs carry out a bit of 'housekeeping' around various items. BASOC have just (today) been informed that we are now a Bronze accredited club! It is likely that a certificate will be presented at our SOL on 23rd September, when we also receive the Scottish Orienteering Small Clubs Trophy.

2. Events

There are many opportunities to go orienteering in the next couple of months. Check out the Events page. As well as finding out about BASOC events, if you scroll down you can see the 'Neighbouring Clubs Events'. For instance, INVOC are having a series of 3 x urban events on Friday evenings in September. If you think of going to these then why not use the BASOC Members Facebook page to share transport?
Also note that SOL4 at Errochty (just off the A9 from Calvine so close by) is Saturday 6th October.
Many events need pre-entry, check this out if you are going to an event outwith BASOC.
BASOC SOL is fast approaching - thank you to all club members who are coming along to help at the event; this is great to see and also we are supporting those who have already put in a lot of time and effort to the event. Jo has a variety of food outlets booked to be there so bring your money. For instance, 'Cheese & Tomatin' will be there.

3. AGM

Please note the date of the BASOC Club Champs & Annual General Meeting. is Sunday 2nd December. This will be based at Newtonmore Village Hall, more details will be posted on the BASOC website.

4. BASOC Club clothing

Jo has a variety of BASOC club clothing for sale.
At the moment she has O tops £18 (1 x womens medium, 1 x unisex large); club jackets £34 (1 x womens large, 1 x womens medium, 1 x large unisex, 1 x extra large unisex). She also has BASOC T shirts and BASOC buffs. Contact Jo if you are interested in any of these - the O tops and jackets need to be tried on as the sizes are quite 'neat'.

5. BASOC articles and TV appearances

Anna Cox has written about her experiences during a junior training camp at Lagganlia.
Very soon we should have articles from Callum about the OOCup (and video) and Kat & Ann about their experiences during the Lakes 5 Days. Keep an eye on the website for these.
The 'Adventure Show' on BBC2 on 19th August (available on iPlayer for another 18 days) showed the British Champs at Balmoral. Many BASOC tops appear, along with quite a few BASOC members speaking during interviews. Make sure that you watch this!

6. Tuesday = O

Thank you to Callum for the last 3 training activities and social.
September Tuesday = O is all detailed on the website; the training on 25th September will be followed by the post-WOLF discussion over soup.
Hilary (Quick) is looking for volunteers to help with the Tuesday = O from October onwards. Please do think about helping out with this, you will be supported if you are new to doing this. Contact Hilary if you can help; she is also interested in hearing about what kind of training would help you make progress as an orienteer.

7. We Need You!

There are some tasks / roles which need a volunteer to help BASOC run well as a club.
(A). We are relocating the club equipment store to Hilary Quick's garden (thank you for this Hilary). I am looking for a project manager for this; basically this person will co-ordinate the shed build (liaise with Hilary / what base / what shed / workforce) and the equipment moving (from the present location to the new location). We are aiming to have the new BASOC equipment store done by the end of November. Please ask Lynne for more details if you think you could be this co-ordinator.
(B). There are some volunteer roles without a post-holder at the moment. The updated list, along with brief details as to what is involved, is here. Anyone volunteering for Events co-ordinator, Mapping co-ordinator, Schools liaison? Please speak to Lynne if you could help the club out with any of these.

Enjoy your autumnal orienteering experiences - it is a wonderful time of year to be navigating around forests, woods and even streets! Write your stories for the website!
