eNews August 2019
What has happened and what will be happening?
BASOC members have been busy orienteering - from Strathearn 2019 to Latvia (World Masters) to Sweden (ORingen) to Lagganlia (Junior tour) to Deeside (Junior tour) to Stockholm (Junior tour). We all look forward to reading reports of these exploits very soon; to start with there is an account of BASOC at Strathearn 2019 here.
What can you do now to get your 'orienteering fix'? There is quite a lot to look forward to, details below of the local happenings; remember that you can look on the Scottish Orienteering website for details regarding future events here.
1. 18th August, BASOC event, Loch Vaa.
Are you coming along to BASOC's own event at Loch Vaa on Sunday? Details are on the BASOC website here. There will be a cake stall (remember your money!!), good weather, excellent courses crafted by Nigel and of course the weather will be good!
2. 24th August, GRAMP 3-in-1 event.
GRAMP are making excellent use of the new Aberdeen Western Peripheral Ringroad (AWPR) on Saturday 24th August to hold three events in one day. The first event is near Stonehaven, use the AWPR to get yourself to Westhill and then be whisked along the road to Balmeddie. Further details are on the GRAMP website here.
3. INVOC events.
INVOC have a number of events coming up which may appeal to BASOC members. Please ensure that you pre-enter / indicate that you are going (as per details on the website here). Maybe share transport to the events?
Sunday 1st September: Nairn East Beach
Fridays 6th/13th/20th Sept: Autumn Urban Series at Lochardil, Kinmylies & Dalneigh, all in Inverness.
"Classic urban orienteering around Lochardil, sprint style orienteering in Kinmylies on a newly extended map, and urban orienteering on the newly mapped Dalneigh. Long and short courses. Winning times of 35 mins on the long."
4. Scottish Orienteering events.
Sunday 1st September: Scottish Score Champs, Faskally Woods and Pitlochry. Pre-entry closes on Monday 26th August.
Sunday 8th September: CompassPoint SOL4 at Drummond Hill, Loch Tay. Pre-entry closes Sunday 1st September.
5. BASOC Tuesday=O.
Tuesday=O continues - yes a slight delay in getting up the details for Tuesday 20th August as Lynne had a senior moment!
Only 6 more Tuesday=O when there is full daylight. Almost time to start thinking about dusting off those head torches, checking the batteries, dipping into the 'courage' box for the DarkO skills . . .
The World Orienteering Championships are taking place in SE Norway at the moment. I have just spent an entertaining hour working out my route for the Middle Distance courses. It is well worthwhile looking at the maps / course which are available through the WOC website here. Maybe we should have a social indoor session and talk about the maps and routes?
