Night Orienteering
Night Orienteering
Published: Wed 20 Feb 2019

A few bits and pieces are happening - read on for more about them all!

For the last two Tuesday trainings at Loch Vaa SW the turnout has been excellent - BASOC members must like a challenge! We have also had a few 'visitors' come along to play with the contours! This training will really help you when the evenings are lighter, orienteering navigation will feel so easy!

Meanwhile all the very best to the BASOC folks who are travelling 'over the hill' to the British Night Champs and SOL 1 this weekend. Maybe get a wee report from someone for the website? And some photos?

1. Events coming up

Sunday 3rd March: Darnaway west. Moravian are holding an event in Darnaway, a lovely forest to run in! Further details are available on the Moravian website here www.moravianorienteeri...

The arrangements are that the group are going to Stirling on the Sat, doing a bit of training in the afternoon and then staying at the youth hostel. 2. Coaching and training

Saturday 23rd March 2019, North Area Junior Training

The North Area Junior Training is restarting next month with Maroc hosting the first one on Saturday 23rd March at Crathes in Deeside. Could people please email Clare with names of Juniors who would like to participate by 28th February It is for all BASOC Juniors, M/W12 and older, who are able to run TD3 courses or above. Parents would have to be responsible for taking children to the training - but there may well be potential for car sharing. Training (and some O games) from 10:30am to 3:30pm, bring your own lunch. If people want to make a weekend of it, there is a GRAMP event on the Sunday 24th March at Glen Dye

Coaching survey

So far, 4 have responded to the survey - do only 4 people from BASOC want any coaching? BASOC has many coaches who can help anyone of any level to improve their orienteering. It can be hard to know what coaching to plan so that it meets the needs of our athletes. Please take 5 minutes to complete the survey here www.surveymonkey.co.uk... to help to inform us about your needs and desires for orienteering coaching.

Also, you can speak to Lynne (BASOC Coaching coordinator) or any other coach at any time about your personal orienteering development and what BASOC can do for you.

3. Tuesdays

As we start thinking about Tuesday orienteering moving into daylight again, I'm looking for volunteers to plan an activity for a Tuesday (or several) - you have total choice of area, type of activity, whether to use controls or not.... and you'll get as much or as little advice and guidance as you want! Please email Hilary Q with offers of help.

4. Child Protection Awareness training

Is anyone interested in this? Active Schools coordinator (Kerrie Dickson) is offering this training to clubs. If you are interested please contact Kerrie directly Kerrie.Dickson@highlifehighland.com. Further information is below:

"I have some new volunteers signed up to support after school activities in the Grantown cluster therefore I am looking to run a Child Protection awareness course. I believe most volunteers old and new will be due to update this training so ideally I’d like to set a time that suits the majority.
I have also included local club members whom have supported schools and active schools programmes / teams so if you have coaches / helpers whom you feel would benefit from attending please get in touch and come along.
Dates that are available include:
Monday the 11 or 18th March evenings 6.30-8pm .Tuesday 5th / 12th / 19th / or 26th March evenings
Possibly Wednesday 27th March evening.
If week nights aren’t good then a Saturday or Sunday morning from 9.30am is an option.
The training only last an hour and a half so if we went for an evening I was considering 6.30-8pm but am happy to be flexible with times that suit the group."
