July and August are often quite quiet months locally as many club members are away on holiday.

We have a few visiting orienteers who come along to run on a Tuesday evening on one of our wonderful areas, please ensure all are welcomed! As part of their holidays, many BASOC are orienteering at events away from BASOC-land and we can look forward to reading reports of their exploits – and maybe planning to go away somewhere in 2020?

1. Strathearn 2019.

18 BASOC will be at this event so our purple and black tops (and the Wolf logo) will be much in evidence! Jo (organiser) and Duncan (planner) have worked hard on day 3 courses and organisation; it is great to see that they will be supported by BASOC members that day (and the day before setting up and after the event clearing up).

The 6 Day Event is always a good time to catch up and Gemma is arranging this:
"It would be great to have a club barbecue over the 6 Days. I'm suggesting the evening of the rest day (Wednesday 31st), 5pm onwards, at the Comrie Croft campsite - I know there are a few of us staying there. We'll put up the banner and hopefully the spare club tent if there's space. Bring your own food and drink or some to share. Everyone is welcome.
Does anyone have a barbecue we can use for that evening? If so, please let Gemma know. If not, we'll get some disposable ones.
Fingers crossed for the weather..."

Please take photos during Strathearn 2019 and jot down a few thoughts so we can get an article together for the website. Pass photos and ‘musings’ to Lynne.

2. Tuesday=O.

Tuesday 23rd July: Alvie estate: please note that it is a bit of a walk into the area, an off road bike would be useful! All details are on the BASOC website here.
Tuesday 30th July: no training in BASOC-land as most will be at Strathearn 2019.
Tuesday 6th August: Laggan. As well as orienteering in the Laggan Wolftrax area, Jo is arranging a BBQ (bring your own food) and social – a time to reflect on Strathearn 2019 and think about heading for a multiday event in 2020? Hopefully some will make it across from the west as Laggan is not too far from them as well! Details on the BASOC website here.

Tuesday=O continues throughout August, details will go on the website when they are known

3. Loch Vaa SE event, Sunday 18th August.

Ann McGougan is organising and sends this message:
Hoping to see a good turn out of BASOC members at the event. Entries are open until 11th August see website for more details.
The plan is to park at the Community Hall and walk/bike 2.2km along tracks through the wood to "The Yard" where registration will be. There will be a covered area for bags. Nigel is planning some great courses with lovely views if you've time to look!
If anybody is able to help set up on the day and/or collect controls at the end we would be very grateful. Please email Ann for more information and to volunteer. kintyre4@btinternet.com

4. Mapping co-ordinator required!

Hilary Quick (Volunteer co-ordinator) says:
We're still looking for someone to be our mapping co-ordinator. Job description is roughly as documented in the roles and responsibilities document, but we're open to discussion and negotiation, and of course would happily arrange for someone to learn whatever they need to learn in order to do the role.
Please get in touch with Hilary if you are interested.

5. Course planning webinar - using Purple Pen

BASOC have a club licence for Condes course planning software (we pay about £100 per year for this). There is another course planning software called Purple Pen which is free to download and can be used for planning training courses and small events. British Orienteering are holding a webinar on Tuesday 23rd July; you can either join in the webinar (and so be able to ask questions) or watch a recording of it. There are more details about this on the British Orienteering website, News section.

6. Junior Home International Selections.

Congratulations to Anna (W16) and Alice (W14) who have been selected to run for Scotland in the Junior Home Internationals. This competition will be held in Northern Ireland over the weekend of 12th and 13th October 2019.

Finally, enjoy your orienteering this summer! Remember to keep an eye on the Events calendar on the Scottish Orienteering website
