BASOC eNews late March 2023
Events, daylight Tuesday=O, volunteer opportunities and a BASOC Club outing!
1. Planning – would you like to try planning an event?
BASOC are holding a local event on either 20th or 27th August 2023. Would you like to be the planner for this? The Board is very keen that this role is taken on by someone with little or no experience; you will be partnered up with an experienced planner.
The area is still to be decided and you could have an input to helping to decide this.

2. Scottish Orienteering Club Conference
The SOA club conference is taking place 10am - 4pm on 15th April at North Inch Community Campus in Perth. BASOC would like to send a couple of delegates, one of whom should / could be someone who has started orienteering more recently. Names to Clare.
The exact agenda is still to be formalised but will include the following:
- SOA finances and strategic plan 2024 – 2028
- Key discussion – what do we mean by a thriving sport and how can we achieve that?
- WOC 2024 Development plan
- Round up of the year with an emphasis on post Covid recovery.
- Feedback from the club listening exercise currently ongoing.
- Competition calendar – achieving the right balance.
A buffet lunch and a fun ‘O’ break will be included.
3. Event Safety & Welfare (ESW) workshop
This ESW workshop is for everyone – whether you are a competitor, someone who only wants to come to BASOC training, an event official (e.g. planner or organiser).
BASOC are holding an interactive, face-to-face ESW workshop on Tuesday 20th June 2023 at Carrbridge Village Hall from 6:30pm to 9:30pm (bring your sandwiches!). There will be no cost for BASOC members.
As the workshop is happening on a Tuesday evening, there will be no Tuesday=O that evening.

4. Tuesday=O
Daylight means we are now back outside for Tuesday=O sessions. Clare has planned some contour training for Tuesdays in April (except for 11th April) at North Granish and Loch Vaa SW. This is an excellent way to get your navigational skills back up to speed!

5. Events
Saturday 15th April: MOR have an event at Dufftown
Sunday 23rd April: SOL 3 at Dunalastair near Tummel Bridge hosted by TAY
Sunday 30th April: GRAMP event at Glen Dye near Banchory
6. Club outing to the seaside!
On Saturday 20 May we're having a club outing to Findhorn, for a local orienteering event (organised by Moravian Orienteers) followed by what we hope will be a sunny picnic by the sea. Put the date in your diary and tell your friends and relations about it - it's for everyone, members and non-members, all ages, expert orienteers or complete beginners - an ideal opportunity to try an event with lots of help. In fact if you'd like to go round with a buddy, that'll be just fine. Details of how to enter will follow before long!
7. Scottish Orienteering Champs weekend: Individual and Relay
27th & 28th May
The championships weekend takes place this year near Oban and BASOC always have a great turnout for the relays each year. We don’t take ourselves too seriously and we very much enter into the Team Spirit element with lots of purple on show! If you are keen to come and join us this year I will be putting together teams soon so get the date in your diary.
