BASOC eNews November 2022
AGM - notification of change of date and Events - loads of different types of event, should be something to suit all and some light reading!
1. BASOC Club Champs, Saturday 26th November 2022
Entries are open – have you entered? At the time of writing, we only have one entry, the club champs will be postponed if there are too few entries to make the club champs viable.
The Club Champs is taking place at Nethy on Saturday 26th November 2022, with the event briefing for all at 10:45am. A Score event format is being used, along with a handicap system.
Information is now available on the BASOC website.
Everyone is welcome to take part - although only BASOC members can become club champ.
Please note that you have to sign up for the Club Champs on a Google Form by Monday 21st November to allow for map printing.
2. BASOC AGM

JANUARY 2023 from 6:30pm via Zoom.

3. Northern Night Cup

4. CompassSport Cup / Trophy and Club Captain
The Scottish event is being held on Sun 12th Feb at Faskally, Pitlochry. Ann (current Club Captain) will put in a rough entry number by 30th Nov. Have you indicated to Ann that you would like to go? She can be contacted via the Contacts page on the BASOC website. Faskally is a reasonably pleasant wood just north of Pitlochry; there is a path network and good contour detail (individual hills!). A map of the area is on the STAG website.
Ann is stepping down from the Club Captain role – would YOU like to take over?
5. BASOC Festive Fun activity
Tuesday 27th December – come along and run off those Christmas meals! We are proposing having a fun event in Ellan Wood at Carrbridge, followed by a social (details to be confirmed at the moment). Kat & Izzy are planning, I am sure they will have some festive fun for all!
Would anyone like to have a shot at organising this? If so, please get in touch with Lynne (via the BASOC Contacts page). What needs to be done – deciding on the social side (food – bring your sandwiches, bring a dish, prize for the festive sandwich? Some indoor games?)
6. Other events
Sunday 13th November, Birsemore (near Aboyne)
Saturday 19th November, Carsehill (or it might have another name by then!), Forres
7. Tuesday=O
There will be Tuesday=O at Moor of Alvie on 15th
and 22nd November 2022. All details are on the Tuesday=O page.
There will then be a break, with a daytime one on Tuesday 27th
December (see item 5 above). At the end of January, Tuesday=O resumes with some Strength & Conditioning (check out the up to date calendar).
8. Date for the future!
Scottish Orienteering are holding a Development Conference in Perth on Saturday 15th April 2023. As yet there are no further details – BASOC would like to send a couple of delegates, one of whom should / could be someone who has started orienteering more recently. Names to Clare.
9. And some light reading to finish . . .
Magnetic North, Grid North, True North – just what is going on? Orienteering maps are drawn to magnetic North which means this has to be changed frequently as magnetic North moves.
For the next 3.5 years they all coincide – over the UK – and slow move north over the country.
Have a read about this on the Ordnance Survey website.
